The world's leading health institutions have concluded there is zero evidence that antibacterial hand wash is more effective at preventing illness. The FDA announced that many soaps marketed as antibacterial (excluding hospital-grade soaps) are no more effective than plain soap and water, and the USA has banned the marketing of “antibacterial” soaps.

Antibacterial soaps have all the same properties as regular soap but with an extra ingredient (commonly triclosan) intended to stop bacteria on your skin from replicating. This additive has no effect on viruses.

Soap works better than alcohols and disinfectants because it destroys the fat membrane that holds viruses together. Once that membrane is dissolved, the virus falls apart and is washed away with water.

To be effective, you need to lather and work in the soap properly. WHO recommends at least 60 seconds of hand washing for best results.

Officials urge people not to view sanitizer as a replacement for soap and water. Sanitizer should only be used if soap and water are not available.

While sanitizer may kill some viruses and bacteria, it does not clean your hands like soap and water do — it won’t remove dirt, grime, or debris. For sanitizer to be effective, it must contain at least 60% alcohol.

Soap binds to viruses, breaks them down, and physically removes them from your skin when rinsed with water.
